Collection: Winter Garden

Winter Garden is a series of 40 watercolor paintings painted in November and December of 2021. I started making these studies of color and transparency as sort of a salvation from the dark Finnish winter time. There is a certain sensitivity towards light and color present in these dream like depictions of branches or plants.

I was focusing on breathing and studying the physical sensations of color. These paintings are painted in layers: the first layer is painted, dried, then very softly washed off, dried again and then painted on top of.  With this technique I create transparent layers that are painted on top of each other.  Painting like this became a ritualistic method of surviving through the darkness.
